Conferences/Forums 2005
The TIPS program sponsors conferences and topic specific forums to aid in transfer of technology to our State counter parts. Conferences and forums provide an effective vehicle for dissemination of the latest technical information to a large group of end users. A few recent examples of TIPS sponsored conferences include:
- Manganese Workshop - The OSM Appalachian Regional office held a manganese workshop on May 17-18, 2005 to facilitate a interaction among several groups of people working on manganese issues in the Appalachian region. The workshop was planned in response to industry concern over the need for perceived low manganese effluent limits currently in place in most Appalachian coal states. For more information or request a cd of the program, contact Brent Means (717.782.4080, ext 18 or bmeans@osmre.gov).
- Water Treatment Forum - The OSM Appalachian Regional office is conducting a forum to discuss the latest trends in water treatment technology as applied to mine drainage issues. The event was held in Pittsburgh, PA on August 15 to 18, 2005 and brought 300 presenters and attendees together. A training session on the software package, AMDTreat, was also widely attended. - Wildlife Summit - OSM held a Wildlife Summit in Louisville, KY on June 22-23, 2005 to explore methods of establishing fish and wildlife habitat on mined lands. The four fold goals of the conference were: 1. Allow interaction between federal and state regulatory authorities, the scientific and regulated communities; 2. Share success and challenges facing mined land and wildlife habitat; 3. Identify issues for future technical transfer events; 4. Gather input for a future “Statement of Mutual Intent” document.
