Groundwater Vistas

Description

Groundwater Vistas is a model-independent graphical design system for MODFLOW, MODPAT, and MT3D.

Used by: Hydrologist and geologists

Uses

  • Create a ground water model of your hydrologic system, calibrate the model via sensitivity analyses, to obtain a realistic model of your system for analysis and prediction of mining related ground water impacts.
  • Plot head, drawdown, and concentration versus time to evaluate the mining impacts on the system (single wells and or regional well fields).
  • Easy data access via spreadsheets and import/export formats to transfer groundwater data.
  • Use particle traces that can change color and/or line thickness by layer, pathlines and travel times to track and or predict groundwater movement for flow or contamination due to mining activity horizontally and vertically.
  • Conduct a detailed parameter sensitivity analysis by selecting the parameter type (e.g. vertical hydraulic conductivity or boundary condition conductance, etc.), the number of simulations, and the parameter value of each simulation. Groundwater Vistas then runs the model automatically and extracts both calibration and head-charge information which you can then display and analyze.
  • Use easy charting capabilities and comprehensive graphical analysis tools including annotating plots with legends, titles, scale bars, to customize your output for display at meetings, in analysis, or in court proceedings.
  • Model impact of mine dewatering operations to regional or local aquifers (PHC evaluation, CHIA development).
  • Model predictions of spoils aquifer re-saturation (PHC evaluation, CHIA).
  • Perform analyses associated with permitting and bond release through comparison of pre and post mining scenarios of the ground water system.
  • Automatically compare and comput the difference between two head-save, drawdown, cell-by-cell flow, or concentration files for permit review.
  • Use to evaluate and ensure an accurate permit review and for recommending changes to the permit.
  • Use ground-water modeling can be used as a predictive tool to help identify unforeseen impacts to a hydrologic system.
  • Assess or optimize remediation or reclamation activities.
  • Water well complaints.
  • Aquifer characteristics for permitting.
  • AML site investigations (ground water flow direction, etc.).
  • Surface/ground water information concerning coal combustion waste disposal.
  • Simulate ground water flow in confined and unconfined aquifers, under steady state or transient conditions.
  • Model flow in surface mine spoil aquifers, and underground mine pools.
  • Simulate aquifer drawdown induced by mine development or pumping.
