OSM Initiatives
OSM supported initiatives stem from huge advances in technical equipment, software and computing power over the past several years. This allows previously unavailable services and equipment to be utilized in Title IV and V programs in conjunction with advanced training by the TIPS program.
- Electronic Permitting (E – permitting) is the electronic submission of permitting
documents via the Internet. It has the potential to eliminate voluminous hard copy permit documents and the travel
required to deliver the documents. It is currently
being used or being evaluated by almost every coal producing State and Tribe.
- Remote Sensing Due to great leaps in the ability to accurately acquire
remote spatial data via satellites and airborne methods, OSM and specifically the TIPS program, has embarked on a
number of Remote Sensing projects in each of the three major regions of country. Although the majority of the projects
have centered on Abandoned Mine Lands projects, a number of prospective projects are currently being evaluated for Title V
(active mining) permitting projects.
- Mine Map Repository As the Quecreek Mine inundation in southwest Pennsylvania clearly indicated, accurate mine maps are a necessity when mining in previous mined terrains. OSM is consolidating all available mine maps throughout the US coal fields. The Mine Map Repository is located in the Appalachian Regional office in Pittsburgh, PA. - Thermal Imaging Thermal imagery technological advancement has allowed smaller, highly accurate hand-held thermal sensing devices to be used in remote locations independent of airborne equipment. Thermal Imaging utilizes differences in absorbed infrared light emitting from objects, and associates the corresponding wavelength with a temperature scale. The equipment is sensitive to within 0.1° C and has an accuracy standard of 10 feet. For more information on the thermal camera, contact Dianne Osborne (303.844.1400, ext 1417 or dosborne@osmre.gov)
